We would like to take this opportunity to give a special thanks to this month's sponsor -- Caroma, leaders in high efficiency dual flush toilets (HETs) and urinals (HEUs). New Caroma Smart Technology* provides significant water savings, averaging 0.9 gallons/flush, saving up to 44% compared to 1.6 gpf and 74% compared to 3.5 gpf toilets. The Smart technology is also used in the recently introduced waterless and 1 pint urinals. All Caroma toilets have a large trapway, virtually eliminating blockages. With 41 WaterSense labeled toilets, Caroma provides exceptional performance while conserving valuable water resources. www.caromausa.com

St. Regis Atlanta use Caroma HETs

Located in the exquisite enclave of Buckhead just a few miles from downtown Atlanta, Georgia, the St. Regis Atlanta stands out as an impeccably groomed “in-town” resort with a gracious, residential feel. At the beautifully-designed hotel, guests can expect unsurpassed pampering in this grand location.

“While the review process was going on, there were several features that were critical to the St. Regis for the bathroom fixtures,” states Mike Charleville, Director of Engineering. “The toilets, for example, needed to fit the style of the elegant rooms and have the appropriate options for the ADA compliant rooms and stalls. Additionally, having toilets that are low maintenance is always preferred, and water conservation is critical for our dry area.”

223 Caroma HETs were installed throughout the hotel, and the results have been impressive. The St. Regis expects to save up to 300,000 gallons of water annually. Additionally savings have been experienced by reduced maintenance costs. They have not experienced any blockages or overflows. Finally, the authentic designs of the Caroma toilets match the St. Regis bathroom style without compromising performance.

Holohan's steam seminar to benefit Oil Heat Cares

Bronx, N.Y. — You can always count on Dan Holohan to support the charity Oil Heat Cares. He is doing just that with a Dead Men's Steam Night School on Wednesday, April 15, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. at the Lawrence F. Keene American Legion Post, 2879 Buhre Avenue, Bronx, NY 10461. All proceeds from this seminar will benefit Oil Heat Cares.

The Lawrence F. Keene American Legion Post is a fitting location to hold a fundraiser for Oil Heat Cares. The New York City Chapter of NAOHSM did an Oil Heat Cares project for these folks. The Post received a new heating system and students from the Alfred E. Smith Vocation Career School in the Bronx had the opportunity to work side-by-side with professional installers. The Post is lending Oil Heat Cares their space so that the charity can continue to help others.

During this seminar, attendees will learn about the many types of old steam heating systems, which will help them become better troubleshooters when it’s time to solve those heating problems. The cost to attend is $129.00 per person. Westchester Square Plumbing Supply (www.wspsonline.com) has been kind enough to donate food for this event. All proceeds will go to the Oil Heat Cares Foundation www.oilheatcares.com. To register, contact NAOHSM at 888-552-0900 or sign up on the website www.naohsm.org.

Astronauts repair plumbing on space station

Outer space — It seems that two American astronauts are getting a crash course in plumbing while aboard the International Space Station. Astronauts Robert Behnken and Nicholas Patrick took a Sunday spacewalk to hook up plumbing to the station’s Tranquility room and its attached observation deck. While on the walk Patrick was hit with frozen ammonia droplets, none of which stuck to his suit or gloves. The ammonia coolant was routed through hoses to get Tranquility power up and running. According to msnbc.com, the $400 million-plus Tranquility and lookout — supplied by the European Space Agency — will hold life-support systems as well as exercise equipment and a toilet.
