Plumbing Industry Council assists St. Louis families

St. Louis — Fifty families benefited from the time, talent and donations of local union plumbing contractors as part of the Annual Rebuilding Together St. Louis event held on May 1. Plumbing Industry Council (PIC) contractors, supplier members and members of Plumbers’ and Pipefitters’ Local #562 joined together in providing plumbing repairs and home renovations for elderly, low-income and disabled residents in the St. Louis area.

Rebuilding Together St. Louis 2010 is a special event the Plumbing Industry Council and Plumbers’ & Pipefitters’ Local #562 are proud to take part in as way to give something back to the community. Contractor members of the Plumbing Industry Council donated service trucks loaded with tools. A wide array of plumbing products (sinks, faucets, toilets, etc.) were also donated by Plumbing Industry Council affiliate (supplier) members. Finally, over 200 members of Plumbers’ and Pipefitters’ Local #562 donated their time and talent to assist those in need.

The homes for Rebuilding Together St. Louis are selected after being referred to the program by churches, neighborhood and community service organizations. Individual homeowners can also request services of the program. Applications are prioritized based upon needs and qualifications before final selections are made. Duke installs energy efficient boilers to reduce footprint

New York — Duke University’s commitment to sustainability continues with a $25 million renovation of its East Campus Steam Plant and conversion to natural gas boilers.

For about 50 years, the plant's coal-fired boilers supplied steam through underground pipes and tunnels to heat campus buildings until the plant closed in 1978. The new plant, complete with 15 Miura LX series gas-fired steam boilers, will provide 35 percent more steam capacity to campus, while simultaneously helping to reduce the University's environmental footprint.

The new gas boilers require less water and time to produce steam - and at lower emissions of greenhouse gases than coal. Instead of using lots of energy to fire up one to three large coal boilers, the plant can calibrate among 15 smaller gas boilers based on demand.

Miura boilers feature an exclusive “once-through” design, which turns water into steam in five minutes (or less) and provides high in-service operational efficiencies. For info, www.miuraboiler.com.

NAOHSM’s Rhode Island Chapter Prepares for 57th Annual Convention

Providence, R.I. — The Rhode Island Chapter of NAOHSM (the National Association of Oilheating Service Managers) is excited to showcase Providence, RI as the site of the organization's 57th Annual Convention and Trade Show from May 23-27, 2010. They are preparing for a number of exciting events. Dave Nelsen Scholarship Tournament - This annual fundraiser and golf tournament will take place on Monday, May 24 and Tuesday, May 25 at the Triggs Memorial Golf Course in Providence, RI (Callaway Scoring). George Fantacone of Santoro Oil in Providence is spearheading this important tournament. The proceeds from this event benefit the Dave Nelsen Scholarship for students planning to further their education in the oilheat industry. NAOHSM will present these scholarships at their Awards Banquet on Tuesday night. "This is the only fundraising event that directly benefits our scholarship fund," says Judy Garber, Executive Administrator of NAOHSM. "With interest rates having been low for a couple of years, we’ve had to tap into our scholarship reserve account to continue awarding the scholarships. Instead of reducing the number of awards this year, we would like to focus on this major fundraiser." NAOHSM invites golfers to come out to the course and support the future of the industry with a day of friendly competition.

Care to Ride - Walkers and riders (motorcycle and bicycle) are invited to come out on May 24 in support of Oil Heat Cares (www.oilheatcares.com). Rhode Island Chapter member Kevin Bowman of Bell Simons Co. will be organizing the motorcycle division of the Care to Ride event. He promises those participating in this event a wonderful ride.

Dan Holohan's Greening Steam Seminar - NAOHSM has also thought about those caught up in rush hour traffic. At the close of the show, 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, attendees are invited to stay behind and catch Dan Holohan's Greening Steam seminar. The first 50 people to register will receive a free copy of his latest book, Greening Steam: How to Bring 19th-Century Heating Systems into the 21st Century (and save lots of green!).

"Ladies Only" Event - The ladies of the industry (manufacturers, those that work for oil, HVAC and plumbing companies) are invited to join NAOHSM for a special “Ladies Only” event, featuring a special presentation by Chef Terranova. NAOHSM will also be collecting gently used shoes and cash contributions to be donated to a local charity serving the children/women in Providence.
